Per impedire il riutilizzo dei francobolli gli Stati Uniti usarono imprimere una "griglia" in rilievo con una piccola cialda di ferro che rompeva le fibre della carta che, in tal modo, avrebbe assorbito l'inchiostro dell'annullo, evitando il reimpiego.
